Ever since she was young, Eleanor had always wanted to make a name for herself as the mastermind detective of Oestermore—pursuer of criminal evildoers! Upholder of truth and justice in her fair city! Unfortunately, none of those compliments could be applied to her until much more recently. It is true that Eleanor pursued a part-time career as a private detective-for-hire in Oestermore for many years, where she'd hoped to make a real difference to her city. The reality was that demand for private eyes in Oestermore was low. The place was just too peaceful. Requests in those early days were mostly of the "runaway cat stuck up a tree" variety.
What was an aspiring private eye to do in peaceful Oestermore? Even Eleanor's talented young robo-dog "Chieftain" virtually never had the chance to practice chasing down a stray cat, let alone robber. But just like that, out of nowhere, everything changed—for her and for Oestermore, forever.
Story
Cities like Oestermore are breeding grounds for myths and legends, myths that never much concerned Eleanor who always felt herself far too sensible for such nonsense. This changed however when an invite came to investigate one such urban legend of an "underground monster" that "lived in the sewers of Ostemore". This invite was accompanied by a hefty wad of cash.
Eleanor suppressed the urge to refuse. After all, how could she satisfy a client looking for supernatural horrors? But she needed money and the money was good. "I guess proving an urban legend is false is also a kind of detective work... especially if someone thinks it's valuable enough to feed me."
Investigating an urban legend of a massive sewer monster demanded expert advice. Eleanor roped in Gisela the artisan for a small consulting fee. The latter already seemed to know quite a lot about various myths and legends—everything it seemed except "Jumping Jack" sightings about which she seemed completely ignorant. Not that this mattered. Other legends could wait.
The dynamic "Sewer Ops" duo began the long and difficult task of getting underneath the city and raking up whatever muck they could find.
But the urban legend was also evolving. What had started as a neighborhood in uproar over strange nightly noises soon grew into reports of missing persons often near sewer entrances! Interest was developing in the case, especially from the neighborhood where residents were going missing. As the case heated up, Eleanor, Gisela and "Chieftain" began the long task of mapping the labyrinth network of ancient sewers underneath Ostermore.
Eleanor wasn't sure what she expected down there in all that dark and damp. As she bid farewell to Gisela who went down another side tunnel, Eleanor turned around and suddenly found herself face to face with a rifle muzzle pointed at her eyes. At that distance the man couldn't miss...
"ARGH!" The man cried out as "Chieftain" threw its jaws against the arm holding the rifle. It was the only split second Eleanor needed to unleash her long-practiced martial arts head-kick. Safely tied up, the man refused to divulge who he was or what he was doing until Gisela revealed a vibrating "Teeth Remover" invention for otherwise inoperable root canals. "You can tell us who you are or you can be my first test subject!" she cried. "OK! I'll talk, I'll talk!" came the man's desperate plea.
The mystery was fairly straightforward. After Phaethon had been expelled from Oestermore all those years ago, they had continued to cherish the hope of one day reclaiming the bastion of technology. However, the city's defenses had been so enhanced in the intervening years that a direct attack was no longer possible. Instead underground was the best way to invade—attacking Oestermore from its roots, as it were. Once divulged, the rest of Phaethon's puzzle fell into place. The giant "sewer monster" was in fact a large digging machine. The disappearances were actually kidnappings of those unlucky enough to cross Phaethon's path, pressed into the service of their massive tunneling project.
Once Eleanor and Gisela realized the truth they also realized there was no time to send a message back to Oestermore's military. Their one and only chance to shut down this secret invasion was now before Phaethon could take countermeasures! Thus Eleanor and Gisela cemented their reputations as heroes by venturing deeper underground into Phaethon's base. While Eleanor distracted the guards with a combination of surprises, bullets, and martial arts, Gisela took control of the giant digger. As the machine roared to live within the confines of Pheathon's tunnel base, confused shouts quickly turned to terror as the digger began bulldozing Phaethon's own facilities. The soldiers fled into the darkness of the tunnels from whence they came and the kidnapped villagers were rescued.
Eleanor and Gisela's actions that day went down in Oestermore history. Both were honored with a splendid awards ceremony in front of the city. Naturally this breathed significant life into Eleanor's failing detective business. Fresh off their famous victory, the two have branched out into other myths, legends, and potential evil activities in Ostermore.
"Gisela has been wonderful to work with. We just can't accept any commissions in relation to Jumping Jack for some reason. So... don't ask."
